Expert Tips for Crispy Hash Browns

    • Don’t Overcrowd: Keep hash browns in a single layer to ensure even crisping. Overcrowding leads to soggy potatoes.
    • Use Frozen Hash Browns: These crisp up better than fresh due to their lower moisture content.
    • Flip for Even Cooking: Breaking them into sections and flipping halfway through ensures both sides are crispy.

    Variations

    • Cheesy Hash Browns: Add shredded cheese during the last couple of minutes in the air fryer.
    • Spicy Hash Browns: Sprinkle cayenne or chili powder for some heat.
    • Herbed Hash Browns: Add rosemary, thyme, or fresh chives for a flavorful twist.

    Serving Suggestions

These crispy air fryer hash browns pair perfectly with:

    • Eggs any style (scrambled, fried, or poached)
    • Avocado toast
    • Bacon or sausage
    • Pancakes or waffles for a complete diner-style breakfast.

Looking for something different? Try using these hash browns as a base for a breakfast casserole or breakfast tacos.

    Storage and Reheating

    • Storage: Keep leftover hash browns in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
    • Reheating: Reheat hash browns in the air fryer at 350°F for about 5 minutes to restore their crispiness.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for hash browns to cook in an air fryer?

Hash browns take about 15 minutes to cook in the air fryer at 370°F. Flip them halfway through for even crisping. Cooking times may vary slightly based on your air fryer model.

How do you heat up frozen hash browns in the air fryer?

To heat up frozen hash browns, set your air fryer to 370°F and cook for about 12-15 minutes. Flip them halfway through for the best results.

Why won’t my hash browns get crispy?

If your hash browns aren’t getting crispy, it’s likely due to overcrowding or too much moisture. Keep the hash browns in a single layer, and use frozen hash browns for the best results.

What is the secret to making good hash browns?

The key to great hash browns is removing excess moisture from the potatoes (if using fresh) and cooking them in a single layer to allow the air fryer to circulate heat evenly.

How do you make frozen hash browns not soggy?

To avoid soggy hash browns, ensure you don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket. A light coating of oil also helps them crisp up nicely.

Is it better to cook hash browns frozen or thawed?

It’s best to cook hash browns frozen in the air fryer. Thawed hash browns tend to release moisture, which can make them soggy instead of crispy.

Should you soak potatoes before making hash browns?

If you’re making hash browns from fresh potatoes, soaking them helps remove excess starch, which prevents the hash browns from sticking together. Just make sure to dry the potatoes thoroughly before air frying.

How do restaurants get hash browns to stick together?

Restaurants often use the natural starch in the potatoes to bind them together. Fresh potatoes are rinsed and dried to remove excess moisture, which helps them crisp up while sticking together.
