Can you air fry cauliflower without oil?
Yes, you can air fry cauliflower without oil, but it may not get as crispy. Oil helps the seasonings stick and adds that roasted texture. If you prefer oil-free, you can spritz the florets with water or light broth.
How to Cut Cauliflower for Air Frying
- Step 1: Start by removing the leaves and trimming the stem from the bottom of the cauliflower. This helps the cauliflower sit flat on the cutting board.
- Step 2: Cut the cauliflower in half vertically, right through the core.
- Step 3: Remove the core from each half by cutting around it in a triangular shape. Once the core is out, the florets will separate easily.
- Step 4: Break or cut the larger florets into bite-sized pieces, making sure they are roughly the same size for even cooking.
Can you cut cauliflower ahead of time?
Yes, you can cut cauliflower ahead of time and store it in the fridge for up to 3 days in an airtight container. This makes meal prep even easier!
How to Make Air Fryer Cauliflower (Step-by-Step Instructions)
Step 1: Add the florets to a large bowl.
Step 2: Drizzle with avocado oil (or olive oil) and add sea salt, black pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika, ground turmeric, and sumac. Toss until the cauliflower is well-coated in oil and spices.
Step 3: Preheat your air fryer to 390°F (if necessary). Place the seasoned cauliflower in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
Step 4: Air fry for 8-12 minutes, shaking or turning halfway through for even cooking. Check for doneness at the 8-minute mark.
How to Roast Cauliflower in the Oven
If you prefer to roast cauliflower in the oven, here’s how you can do it:
- Step 1: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Step 2: Prepare the cauliflower the same way by cutting it into florets and seasoning with oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder, smoked paprika, turmeric, and sumac.
- Step 3: Spread the seasoned cauliflower florets in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Step 4: Roast for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the cauliflower is golden brown and tender.
Expert Tips
- Cut Uniformly: Ensure your florets are similar in size for even cooking.
- Don’t Overcrowd: Leave space between the florets in the air fryer basket so they can roast evenly.
- Flip Halfway: Shaking or turning the cauliflower halfway through ensures even browning.
- Preheating Tips: Preheating isn’t always required, but it can help the cauliflower cook faster and crispier.
Do I need to preheat the air fryer for cauliflower?
Preheating isn’t necessary for all air fryers, but it can help speed up cooking. Some models, like the Instant Pot Vortex, preheat automatically.
Serving Suggestions
- Pair with grilled chicken, steak, or tofu for a balanced meal.
- Toss into salads or grain bowls for extra texture and flavor.
- Serve with dipping sauces like tahini, ranch, or spicy aioli for a snack.
Storage and Reheating
- Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Reheating: Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for 3-5 minutes to restore crispiness, or microwave for a softer texture.
Variations
- Spicy: Add 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper for heat.
- Cheesy: Toss with Parmesan or nutritional yeast before air frying.
- Lemon-Garlic: Squeeze fresh lemon juice and sprinkle extra garlic powder after cooking for a zesty finish.
